Once you get your website up and running, the most important task you have is to drive traffic to it. Whether you want to increase the number of your email subscribers or get more people to buy your products, you won’t get far if nobody is visiting your site.
While social media promotion and tactics such as paid ads or being featured on other websites are a great way to get visitors to your site, nothing beats organic traffic. Once you start showing up for your targeted keywords in the search engine results pages naturally, you don’t have to spend money on ads nor do you have to spend so much time finding new places that will feature you.
Even though SEO seems scary, there are a few easy ways to improve your search engine rank and in today’s post, I’ll share nine easy and actionable ways that will help you get found in search engines.
Nine Actionable Ways to Improve Your Site’s SEO
The tips on this list are easy to implement even if you’re a beginner and best of all; won’t take up hours of your precious time.
1. Fill Out Category Descriptions
The first tip on the list is to fill out category descriptions. Since category pages act as landing pages for each particular category on your site, you should spend some time optimizing them for search engines as doing so will allow you to rank higher for those categories. On top of that, your category description is the perfect place to add your keywords so head over to your dashboard and fill them out under Posts >Categories > Category Description.
2. Add ALT Text For Every Image
One piece of the SEO puzzle that often gets overlooked is optimizing images for SEO. The easiest way to do this is to add alt text tags for each and every image on your site. The alt text is used by search engines to understand what a particular image is showing to the user. Adding them to your images helps search engines understand your content better and results in a higher rank if your images and content are relevant.
You can easily add alt text as you upload images to your site or you can use a plugin like SEO Image Optimizer to have image alt tags dynamically generated. What’s more, this plugin will also compress images for you which will help your site load faster.
3. Optimize Your Site to Load Fast
It’s no secret that Google loves fast websites so now is the best time to optimize and improve your loading time. First, test your site with a tool like Pingdom Tools and then implement the following tips:
- Make sure your images are saved in a web-friendly format – use JPG for portraits, landscapes, product images, and any other photo or image that has lots of details. Use PNG for solid color backgrounds, icons or any photo that requires a transparent background
- Consider using a Content Delivery Network (CDN) to serve your images and other visual assets instead of your own website. A CDN will allow those assets to be delivered from a server that’s closest to them which will make your site load faster
4. Compress Images
Another tip to improve your SEO is to compress your images. Images that are too big in size will make your site load slow. You can use a plugin such as ShortPixel to optimize any image that you have already uploaded to your site. The plugin will also automatically optimize future images you upload to your site.
Alternatively, you can use a service like TinyPNG to compress your images and reduce their size before you upload them to your website.
5. Focus on Medium-Sized Keywords
A common advice when it comes to improving your SEO is to use long-tail keywords. But, by using medium-sized keywords throughout your copy, you will be able to capitalize on keywords that get higher search volume and less competition because everyone is so focused on long-tail keywords.
Medium-sized keywords consist of two or three words and it will allow you to automatically target similar keywords and related terms.
6. Write Emotion-Driven Headlines
According to a study done by CoSchedule, content that uses emotion-driven headlines gets roughly 1000 more shares on social media. This improves your click-through rate which in turn tells the search engines that your content is relevant to what people are looking for. The search engines will then rank your content higher.
A great way to ensure your headlines are emotion-driven is to use the CoSchedule’s Headline Analyzer tool. All you have to do is run your headline through it and you’ll get a result on how well your headline scores. The tool will also give you suggestions on improving your headline and the higher the score the better your headline is.
7. Take Advantage of LSI Keywords
LSI keyword is a term that refers to the concept of Latent Semantic Indexing which is a fancy term for describing searches related to a particular term or word. In other words, you can find LSI keywords by entering your word or phrase into Google and then scrolling down to the bottom of the page where you will see “related searches” like in the screenshot below.
Using those keywords in your content, blog posts, and even titles can help you rank higher in search engine results pages because they give you more keywords and potential pages to target.
8. Use Brackets in Titles
If you’re looking for a truly easy and fast tip, then don’t miss this one. An interesting study by HubSpot and Outbrain shows that titles with brackets perform 33 percent better than titles without.
An easy way to add brackets to your titles is by including terms like (Video Tutorial Included), (Free Checklist Inside) or (Step By Step Guide). Including titles helps you stand out more on the search results page which improves your CTR rate. Pair that with an emotion-driven headline and you’re bound to see an improvement in your SEO rank.
9. Format Your Text
The last tip is to format your text, whether you’re writing blog posts, product descriptions or refreshing the pages on your site. Text that is properly formatted is not only easier to read but it also helps search engines understand your site better. Here are a few tips to help you format your text:
- Use headlines where appropriate to break up the text
- Refrain from using long paragraphs and walls of text. Instead, focus on writing paragraphs that are no more than 3 sentences long
- Consider using bullet points or numbered lists to make your content more scannable. Lists work great with product descriptions when you need to list out product’s features and benefits
- Make sure you’re not using a script font that’s hard to read. Use a legible font such as serif or non-serif that’s set to at least 18px
