Video: Top 10 Unusual WordPress Plugins

If you’ve been using WordPress for a while, you probably know there is a myriad of plugins in the official repository as well as on various marketplaces such as CodeCanyon and third-party developer websites.

While some plugins are useful, others serve no real purpose other than being used for fun. In this post, I want to show you top 10 unusual plugins that I have found. The plugins on this list are, sadly, no longer maintained but I wanted to show you what all is possible when you pair WordPress with a little creativity.

MyPuzzle Plugin

The first plugin on the list, MyPuzzle Sliding allowed you to add a sliding puzzle to any post or page on your site. This is a fun way to encourage visitors to interact with your website and spend more time on it. Sadly the plugin is no longer available for download but you can use a plugin like Jigsaw Planet as an alternative.

This plugin comes with more options that allow you to create different types of puzzles on Jigsaw Planet website and then embed them into your WordPress blog.

Doodl plugin

Doodl allows your website visitors to draw a little doodle and save it to your site’s sidebar. The plugin still works but it hasn’t been updated in quite a while so test it first if you want to use it on your site.

Asteroids Plugin

The Asteroids plugin makes it easy to your visitors to play this old-school shooter right on your website. They can use Asteroids to “destroy” the contents of your pages so you can use it as a frustration relief. It’s been a while since the plugin has been updated so use it with caution if you must. Alternatively, you can try adding the Snake plugin and allow your users to spend hours on your site playing this popular game.

Quiz Cat Plugin

The Quiz Cat Plugin is the only plugin on this list that is still actively maintained and is useful too. You can easily create interactive quizzes with this plugin and increase not only the number of engagements on your site but also grow your email list.

The plugin allows you to create unlimited quizzes and you can easily ask for visitor’s name and email address before showing them the results. Quiz Cat plugin integrates with popular email service providers including Active Campaign, ConvertKit, Aweber, MailChimp, and more.

Never Gonna Give You Up Plugin

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been rickrolled! Although this plugin won’t rickroll your visitors, it will replace Hello Dolly lyrics in your dashboard with Never Gonna Give You Up lyrics. This is another plugin that hasn’t been updated in a while but still works.

If you want an alternative that’s actively maintained, how about Hello Ziggy plugin?

The plugin will randomly display a lyric from Ziggy Stardust in the upper right of your admin screen on every page so if you’re Bowie fan, give it a try.

Fireworks and Snow Plugin

If you’re feeling celebratory, then displaying fireworks on your website is a must. The Rocket Fireworks plugin will, as the name suggests, display fireworks on your site. Use it during major celebrations such as 4th of July or New Year’s Eve.

If you want to add a wintery feel to your website, then the Snow plugin is a good choice. Similarly, to the Fireworks plugin, this one will show snow falling on your site.

The two plugins above have last been updated 2 years ago so chances are they will still work on your website.

Flash Games

The Flash Games plugin allows you to add hundreds of card games such as BlackJack, Slots, and more to your website. However, it is no longer available for download. If you’re looking for something similar, Multiplayer Games Plugin could be the solution you’re looking for.

You can embed browser-based games on your site and let your visitors have some fun. This is a great plugin to consider if you’re running a gaming website.

Shoot The Zombie Plugin

Get ready for the zombie apocalypse with Shoot the Zombie plugin. This plugin was designed just for laughs. The plugin adds a button that makes a zombie appear and you have to shoot it using your mouse. Sadly, the plugin is no longer actively updated but it still works so if you need to up your zombie defense skills, give this one a try.

Elizaibot WordPress Plugin

This plugin adds a chatbot to your website that allows visitors to have a conversation with it. You can ask the bot all kinds of questions and the bot replies with pre-written responses. The plugin is no longer actively maintained but if you want to use chatbots to interact with your site visitors, I have a video tutorial on how to add a chatbot to your website.

Big-ass Radio Plugin

The Bigg Ass Radio Widget added a a radio widget that played various music genres. Your visitors could pick a station and listen to music while browsing your site. If you want something similar, give the TechGasp Spotify Master plugin a try.

With this plugin, you can easily add your playlists and albums from Spotify to any widgetized area on your site.

Final Thoughts

As I mentioned earlier, the plugins on this list are not super-useful but they are still loads of fun so use them as a learning experience. Where possible, I’ve provided an alternative or a similar plugin so if you are intrigued by this type of functionality, consider the alternative plugins listed.

Even though the majority of these plugins are no longer supported, it’s still nice to see what all you can do with WordPress. Who knows, maybe the plugins on this list will inspire you to create your own fun and unusual WordPress plugin.
